Eastern Red Cedar

Made with wood from the Eastern Red Cedar tree, Juniperus virginiana. Often used in clothes chests and lining closets, when turning it is the smelliest wood in my workshop. This is the same genus as most junipers used in landscaping. Native to Virginia, all mine grew within a few miles of my workshop. I start with the log for cedar, even though it takes years for it to dry. This provides grain orientation choices and thickness rarely found at the lumber yard. I prefer to show off the rich red heart wood, while featuring the white sapwood inclusions and dark knots. The resulting tools are always spectacular.
